We got a few packets of "Rainbow Crystals" from one of Ms. Cose's students this week. We put the crystals in water and watched them absorb the water and expand into a sort of jelly-like state. Then, we mixed food coloring into the crystals and planted seeds in each bucket. The seeds are supposed to grow in the crystals. We thought it was quite a cool experiment to try and hope we can share positive results with you soon!

In January, the second graders took a week to become penguin experts. They read books, watched videos, did special projects, and wrote their own fact books. They put to use their knowledge of penguin parenting and became penguin parents for a day. Each second grader brought a "nest" to keep an actual egg in, and were responsible for making sure their egg was with them and protected at all times though out the day. The penguin eggs even got to go to recess. At the end of the day, the eggs hatched and the second graders got to meet their new friends! It was a fantastic week! A few of our penguin projects! This quarter we are working on writing "How To" descriptive writing. Here's one of our first projects. :)
We have been working on making our writing neater. This week we made sure our capital letters, spaces, and end marks were all in place. We wrote about how to make Frankenstein pretty. I just love their creativity! This week we worked on fluency and expression through performing reader's theaters. They did a wonderful job!
Today the second graders heard that the LEGO company was having 'problems' thinking of new LEGO set designs. We decided to use what we have learned in science about solving problems to help them out. Each student made a plan based on what they know about LEGOs and with the knowledge that they would only get to use up to 50 LEGOs. We built models of our designs and drew conclusions to see if we were successful! Check out our hard work!
This morning we worked on using different voices when we read to help what the character is saying to stand out. We listened to Skippyjon Jones Class Act being read by its author Judy Schachner and then practiced our expressive reading with a partner. :)
On Friday we had Penguin Parenting day! Each student brought a nest to keep their egg in and could choose to dress as a penguin for the day. We learned that both moms and dads help take care of the chicks. They took their eggs with them everywhere (recess, lunch, pencil sharpening) and had to try to keep them safe and warm. We only had two casualties. :) At the end of the day the eggs 'hatched'! This is the song we taught the 1st graders. :) |
